Plot: What’s the nature of being a parent and of being a child? David is a widower grieving for two years. He writes science fiction and was considered weird as a boy. He meets Dennis, a foster child who claims to be on a mission from Mars, stays in a large box all day, fears sunlight, and wears a belt of flashlight batteries so he won’t float away. David takes the six-year-old home on a trial. His sister and his wife’s best friend offer support, but the guys are basically alone to figure this out. Dennis takes things, is expelled, and is coached by David in being normal. Will the court approve the adoption, and will Dennis stay? Can a man become a father and a child become a son? I’ve been wanting to see this movie for a long time. I always wanted to catch it in theaters, but never could due to financial circumstances. But yesterday, as I was walking by a Redbox machine, I thought of finally renting a movie. When I saw they were offering this movie, I thought it was about time I see it. And I am so glad I did.

As the plot summary says above, the movie is about a writer who adopts an eccentric young man. Dennis (Bobby Coleman), who reminds David of his childhood, is by far different from other children. We see the journey of raising a child from Mars and the hardships David (John Cusack) goes through.

I. Love. Bobby Coleman. He is soooo adorable. His fiery red hair and just overall awesome acting skills sold me. He did such a good job in this movie. Joan and John Cusack sure did pull their part. As did Amanda Peet.

This movie was really good. I didn’t find any flaws. Just some awkward script writing, but nothing that can be overlooked. There are some crew sightings and some mistakes in location and facts. But nothing devastatingly disastrous.

As I looked through the special features, I was happily surprised to see a documentary on the real Martian Child, some deleted/alternative scenes, and some precious film on Bobby Coleman during the filming.

The movie may not be everyone’s cup of tea, coffee, or overall bottle of Mountain Dew, but I felt it was such a touching movie. I found myself tearing up on more than one occasion. I feel you shouldn’t let the opportunity pass you to see a good movie these days. For they are surely disappearing. Grab this movie and watch it.
