This movie is beyond amazing. The whole feel of the movie just makes you tingle with excitment. It was filmed in South Korea by none other than the genius Park Chan-wook. I first saw this movie in 2003 when it was released. My darling sister had a “special edition” of Oldboy one christmas and we decided to watch it. She knew I was a devout asian lover, so we had to see it together. My first impression was, I NEED TO MARRY PARK CHAN-WOOK.
The first scene starts off with Choi Min-sik who plays Oh Dae-su. Let me just say this man has to be the best actor I have seen in a long time. His technique is flawless. He is a VERY talented man. Choi Min-sik plays a man who is kidnapped and held captive for 15 years with no explanation why. Just as the plot above says, he is then released and begins to find answers to why he was kidnapped and imprisoned. The acting this man had to do was to over the top. He was perfect for this part and I can’t think of anyone else who could have touched it.
Then there is the gorgeous Yu Ji-tae who plays Lee Woo-jin. I won’t say much about his part for it will (in my opinion) give away some of the movie. Let me just say that he did a magnificent job playing Woo-jin. He did not hesitate, stumble or even make it awkward. He played his part very well and I adored HIM. Even if he was the *** ***. (Hahah that’s not conspicuous).
Now, there has been rumors (not really rumors I’m just hoping they realized what they’re doing is a mistake) that Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are making a remake of Old Boy. Yes, they argue its going to be more from the comic than the movie, but….. the original WAS adapted you can say from Nobuaki Minegishi’s comic. So…. Yes. You can watch both if you feel the need. BUT you must see the original. It is a fantastic movie which all and every movie fan must see. Forget that there’s subtitles. They have an english dubbed track where it’s a american speaking. I usually say NO to dubs but in this case I embrace it. It’s awesome. There’s quite a bit of violence; just close your eyes. Sex? Pretend you don’t here or see it. Language? Think of it as patriotic. The Marines say the same thing… HAHA.
